Darlene Love - “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” (Letterman, 1995)
God DAMN, I will never get sick of watching this.
A highlight of the holidays each year.
I just wrote the same thing over on NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour page. To me, the Letterman last-show-before-Christmas show is the only Christmas tradition I care about, the only one I look forward to with the same giddy anticipation I did as a kid to Christmas morning until I learned there was no Santa.
I love every second of it: Jay Thomas telling the Lone Ranger story, the Quarterback Challenge, and the highlight of highlights, Darlene Love doing this song, Paul Shaffer in a Santa hat directing an ensemble that seems to get bigger ever year, fake snow falling during the final chorus, and, impossibly, Darlene Love sounding even better than last year. Every year.
Anyway, I fucking love David Letterman. Always have, and not just because he’s a Hoosier. It’s probably my favorite episode of television ever, and it happens every year.
