A couple of samples comparing the HDR photo setting in iOS 4.1. These are the best examples I came up with; just like other tone-mapping and HDR methods, the results are mixed, depending on the situation.
Technical notes: no post-processing other than resizing full-size JPGs to 800px wide, exported from Photoshop CS4 using Save For Web, JPEG quality 80.
